Old Garrett's Grill - Pensacola, FL
- 944-3444
$7.00 Cheeseburger
Final Score: 6.00Map
Today we took on the half pound Burger from Garrett’s Restaurant in Pensacola, FL. We had high expectations after one Yelp Contributor wrote “Next to the Blue Dot they (Garrett’s) have Pensacola's best burgers.” True, everyone is entitled to their opinion- sadly ours does not agree with that of the aforementioned Yelp Personality. The Burger does have a nice flame- kissed, smoky flavor- but each Panel Member agreed their burger was overcooked, and as a result- somewhat dry.
The Burger is served on an average bun, with sub-par produce. It was the type of Burger you’d expect at a Company picnic, or at a ball game- not “bad” but certainly not the area’s best.
This means only one thing; Our search must
continue…

CJ's Kitchen and Grille -
Pensacola, FL - 435-9543
$5.95 Cheeseburger
Final Score: 7.61Map
Today we tried the “Good Ole’ Burger” at CJ’s Kitchen and Grille. A hand shaped patty that’s larger than most- cooked to order. It’s served on a soft bun with lettuce, tomato, onion and a homemade mustard dressing. The tomatoes were fresh, but the leaf lettuce and sliced onion were average at best.
Some commented that their burger was dry, while others didn’t care for the dressing that had been added.
The best thing this burger has going for it is the meat- it’s good quality- but it was labeled by some as “bland” and “dry” by others. In all- the Burger was a classic case of “Good, not great.”
Everyone seemed to like the Burger- but nobody was IN LOVE with it. The Burger received a final score of 7.61 from our Panel of Judges.
That being said, our quest must continue
next week- as we press on in
search of the Pensacola Area’s best Burger.

Hip Pocket Deli - Pensacola, FL
$9.23 3.5 lb Hamburger
Final Score: 5.21If you’re looking for authentic Greek food, excellent chocolate cake, and plenty of southern hospitality, the Hip Pocket Deli is a must stop. This tour, however, is not about environment or cake, it's about the TASTE of the burger.
If we were giving points for size, value, or the spirit in which the burger is served, we’d have to give this stop a perfect 10. When it comes down to taste though, this burger scores quite a bit lower. In order to make sure this 3.5 pound burger is cooked thoroughly- it's served well done. If it weren't for the homemade dressing this burger would have been extremely dry. Honestly, it’s more of a Greek meatloaf sandwich than a burger-it should be called a gyro burger.
It’s served on a bun the size of a frisbee with average produce and a 1/2 mayo 1/2 mustard dressing. Despite this burger’s shortcomings, these are some of the nicest folks we’ve met on the Tour so far. Their burger is more of a novelty. It’s HUGE.
So, if you’re looking for good times, Greek food, and a 3.5 pound burger to shock your friends, hit the Hip Pocket in Pensacola.

Tops Hamburgers - Pensacola, FL
$2.25 Hamburger
Final Score: 7.50We’ve found that several of these great Burger joints have limited or NO seating available. This was the case at Tops where we ordered a bag full of Burgers and drove to a nearby park to eat.
Our first impression of the Burger was that it’s simple, and good. At this point of the Tour, we’re finding that many Burgers (although tasty) pale in comparison to the Blue Dot. It’s not that the Tops Burger wasn’t good- it was, but each Panel Member agreed that they’d rather drive a little further and order a Blue Dot, in fact- some of us considered it (kidding.)
The Tops Burger was served on a great bun, with average produce. The only disappointing part of the Burger was the mediocre patty. It was clearly a frozen patty- good quality, but somewhat tasteless.
In all, the Tops Burger finished with a final score of 7.5- a good Burger- but it’s certainly not the Best in the Area, it was just “good”, not “great.”
And so, you know what this
means; next week- the Tour Rolls on in search of the Greater Pensacola
Areas best Burger!

The Oval Office - Milton, FL
$5.99 Cheeseburger
Final Score: 8.50Alright, alright- so we’re not taking “atmosphere” into consideration- but IF we were- it would be hard to beat the Oval Office. From the minute you walk in the place- it feels like Home, one big happy family. Ask for a refill and you’ll see what I mean- you’ll get it- along with an eye roll and an exasperated sigh from your Server….just like at Home. That’s what makes this place so great. Everyone working here seems to genuinely enjoy their job- and it shows. A fun, laid back atmosphere.
Now the Burgers- they’re top notch, cooked perfectly- and topped with fresh produce that can’t be beat. They’re served on a soft hamburger bun that’s nicely toasted and not too heavy. The “Myrtle Burger” is without a doubt the finest Burger on the Oval Office menu- it’s a cheeseburger topped with nearly a pound of sautéed onions.
For the sake of the Tour- we stuck with the traditional Cheeseburger (for comparison sake) and passed on the Myrtle this time. This Burger received high marks by several- but others insisted the Burger was just “Okay” in their opinion. Several made the comment that the burger was not quite as nice as the one we enjoyed last week at the Blue Dot- and the score reflects that.
And so, our Quest will continue next week as we search for; The Greater Pensacola Area’s BEST BURGER…

The Blue Dot - Pensacola, FL
$4.00 Hamburger
Final Score: 8.61We began the 2009 Burger Tour at The Blue Dot in Pensacola, FL. We started here for two reasons; The Burger is great, and we know what to expect when we visit the Blue Dot. Just as we suspected- The Burger hadn’t changed one bit since our visit last year. It was the same Burger we’ve come to love and trust time and time again. A hand shaped hamburger patty, on a soft, toasted buttered bun. No lettuce on this Burger (thank goodness- we’ve found lettuce to be useless anyway.) And don’t think about asking for cheese on your Burger at the Blue Dot- if you do- you’ll be kindly informed; “We don't have any cheese.” Surprisingly, that didn’t keep the Burger from receiving extraordinarily high marks. Topped with sliced tomatoes that were perfectly ripened- and the quality one would expect from their own personal garden- they were dusted with the perfect blend of salt and pepper. Sprinkled with a few diced onions, mustard and mayonnaise- this Burger is simple and excellent. Nothing on this Burger is overdone.
One Panel Member who doesn’t like mayonnaise noted that the mayo on the Blue Dot Burger was applied sparingly, and in such a way that it blended well with the juices of the tomato- and was actually quite nice. The Burger comes sliced in half- and ready to eat.
Seating is limited at the Blue Dot- so we enjoyed these fine Burgers at a park nearby. All in all- the Blue Dot has become a reliable source of terrific Burgers.
The Score might not reflect it, but the Blue Dot is considered by some of the Senior Members of the Tour to be the finest stop on the entire Tour…only time will tell.
Next week, the quest
continues….
